The Best Articles I Have Ever Written Will Never See the Light of Day
You’re only writing for yourself.
This
is, hands down, the worst part about writing. Humans have a natural
tendency to write for themselves when in reality the only time it sells,
the only time it’s impactful is when the writing is selfless (or at
least a healthy balance).
My
favorite article I have ever written is titled “If You Could Play God.”
I first wrote it almost two years ago when I was still a little tipsy
after a beach-themed party and have been editing it ever since. I’ve
probably put more hours into that piece than all of my college essays
combined. It’s 8 minutes of pesudo-philosophical computer science
mumbo-jumbo that literally gives me shivers every time I read it because
it’s that epic.
And it’s just sitting there in my “Unpublished Drafts” section on Medium, but I’ll never move it. Why? Because no one would get it.
You
would have to complete a four-credit course on Maxisms before even
grasping the simplest concepts I reference. Plus, with textbook prices
nowadays that’ll cost like $40,000,000,000. It’s just not worth it.
My
point is be passionate but stay grounded. The road to hell is paved
with good intentions and well… us writers are half-way there already.
